Research summary
In the past decade, teenage pregnancy has become a renewed area of interest for public health. The majority of existing research has focused on developing interventions to promote effective parenting, rather than exploring the experiences of this population, particularly regarding their strengths and positive qualities. Many teenage mothers experience difficult life circumstances, but despite this, generally cope well with motherhood. This could be underpinned by resilience; the ability to adapt to maintain functioning despite adversity. This study will explore resilience in teenage mothers using semi-structured interviews and a resilience questionnaire to measure and find out more about resilience in this population. The study aims to recruit approximately eight and ten teenage mothers (aged 15-19) who are first time mothers and whose children are at least six months old. Participants will take part in individual interviews to explore and discuss what contributes to their resilience levels. The interview data will be analysed using Intepretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and themes will be extracted from the data. The results of this study will be used to deepen our understanding of the experiences of teenage mothers and may inform how services and support are offered to this population.
