  • Research summary

Within social care in the UK, there is an increasing focus on prevention; aimed at slowing the burden of poor health. In addition, the most recent government reform paper, titled people at the heart of care (2021) highlights barriers in access to care and support, and suggests local authorities are failing to report the drivers of unmet care needs. This research asks the question: what are the experiences of services users when they are planning for domiciliary care in the UK?

This research will give an insight into individuals thoughts and experiences at the time they are planning to receive domiciliary care, this may help to gain an understanding of unmet care needs, explore why they are not reported correctly, and thirdly this research will examine the links between preventative social care and domiciliary care.

Participation in the study is open to individuals aged over 60 years of age, residing in the St Helens area who are at the care planning stage for a package of domiciliary care. Potential participants will be recruited by their direct care team whilst completing a health and social care needs assessment the Health professional will hand out information sheet to eligible individuals inviting them to participate.

The information sheet will prompt potential participants to contact the researcher by telephone or email to arrange an interview in a location that is convenient for them. During the interview participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences of care planning. The interview will last approximately 1 hour and will be at a location to suit the participants’ needs, with consent the interviews will be audio recorded.
