Research summary
Suicide/self-harm behaviour is a major health concern. Patients in medium secure units such as Wathwood Hospital, are at high risk of suicide/self harm as they have many of the risk factors associated with this behaviour i.e. male, substance misuse, mental illness. Although a limited number of medium secure units are carrying out suicide/self-harm formulation, ’Best Practice’ Guidelines, i.e. NICE (2011) recommend that organisations caring for vulnerable individuals should carry out a formulation specific to suicide/self-harm in order to better prevent and manage this behaviour. The aims of this research are to determine whether professionals can reliably construct a suicide/self-harm formulation and risk management plan and whether this formulation leads to improved intervention and positive patient outcomes. This study will be conducted at Wathwood Hospital and participants will include all patients currently detained there and staff members working for the organisation. Wathwood Hospital is on its fourth year of carrying out this specific formulation, although it has not yet been scientifically tested.
