Research summary
Borderline personality disorder can be a serious mental health disorder, which is characterised by a lack of ability to regulate emotions and high rates of self-harm and suicidal behaviour and can be hard to both treat and manage effectively. Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT) which was developed by Bateman and Fonagy is emerging as an effective and cost-effective treatment for this disorder. The HUB program is a program unique to NHS Grampian as it delivers MBT therapy solely in groups (original MBT therapy combines both individual and group therapy). Anecdotally this program has been well received by both patients and therapists, however it has not been systematically investigated. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate in a systematic way the effectiveness of the HUB program at treating the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder.
