Research summary
An evaluation of a tool to assess suicide and self-harm risk in Children and Young People presenting to acute paediatric inpatient hospital settings in mental health crisis:
Why: There are increasing numbers of children and young people coming to hospital in mental health crisis, with unsafe thoughts or behaviours, such as harming themselves or having thoughts or behaviours about ending their life. They also often feel very stressed and vulnerable during this time. It is important that the doctors and nurses caring for these children and young people assess their safety fully so that they can provide safe care for them. A questionnaire/tool which assesses children and young people’s safety when admitted to hospital in mental health crisis has been developed. We wish to see what doctors and nurses think of this questionnaire and whether it is useful and effective when caring for these children and young people. The results from this can then inform the use of the tool in the future.
Who and Where: 15 nurses and doctors who have used this questionnaire in children's services across Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospital of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation TrustHow: The doctors and nurses who volunteer will be interviewed either over the phone or face to face for approximately 30 minutes about their experiences of using the questionnaire.
