Research summary
One of the criticisms of the DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap harvest is its tedious dissection and prolonged operative time. Hence, several operative strategies have been explored, different imaging techniques have been used and refinements in surgical techniques have been made amongst other steps to improve the efficiency of this reconstructive breast surgery procedure. More recently, affordable three dimensional (3D) printers have made it possible for surgeons to develop customised implants for their patients and manufacture surgical instruments. At the Welsh centre for burns and plastic surgery, I have developed a simple cost-effective abdominal retractor specifically designed to retract abdominal wall and the peritoneum during DIEP flap harvest to make the intra-abdominal approach for division of perforator easier.
