  • Research summary

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans give us detailed pictures of the brain. Today in the NHS we use MRI scans every day. They help diagnose brain diseases and guide treatments. These scans are very safe as they use magnetic and radio waves rather than dangerous radiation.

We have made a new type of scan which measures the health of the blood vessels in the brain. This is useful because the blood vessels become leaky in diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or traumatic brain injury (TBI). These are conditions which affect lots of people.

We want to test these scans by recruiting people with MS or TBI. We will do the scans at two times, to see how the results change over time. Then we will see if the results give useful people useful information about their condition.

During this study people will have the MRI scans, which involving lying down inside a large tube. A contrast dye injection is also used to show areas of blood vessel leakage. Participants will also be asked to give blood and urine samples, and to complete some health questionnaires.

There will be two study visits during a period of one and half years.

Results of scans will be fed back to participants. The final study results will also be shared. People with MS and TBI have been involved in the design of this study.
