Research summary
This study has been commissioned by The Ambulance Staff Charity (TASC). Recently, TASC have identified that a significant number of staff accessing their service are disclosing experiences of domestic violence or abuse. TASC would therefore like to understand these issues from the perspective of ambulance staff so that they can offer the most appropriate services. As well as dealing with issues of domestic violence and abuse, this study also considers childhood experiences that may have had a detrimental impact on health and well-being as well as symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder which is particularly relevant given the regular exposure to trauma in the ambulance service. Finally, the study considers the strategies ambulance staff use to cope with any of the above issues and asks for suggestions as to how employee support could be improved.
Eligible research participants will be all members of the ambulance service within the North West and East Midlands areas. The study will use an anonymous online survey (onlinesurveys.ac.uk) and we hope to recruit 150 participants in total. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete and we intend to leave the survey open for one month.
