Research summary
The aim of this project is to collect data on two new cohorts of participants: the siblings and grandparents of the original ALSPAC study children. New data collection in the siblings will enable us to ‘catch-up’ by obtaining baseline information on the siblings that we can use moving forwards. Similarly, by obtaining retrospective information from the grandparents and additional information about their parents (i.e. the great-grandparents of the original study children) we will be building a unique resource from which important research questions can be answered. We do not have specific hypotheses at this point in time; instead we are aiming to build a resource to enable family and trans-generational studies as detailed in section A12. This is consistent with how ALSPAC data has been used to date—researchers within ALSPAC and worldwide generate hypotheses in their respective areas of research/expertise, and use ALSPAC data to address those hypotheses. The collection of DNA from saliva samples from enrolled siblings and grandparents will enable us to add to the existing genome-wide association study (GWAS) resource.
