Research summary
Patients with periodontitis (severe gum disease) are more likely to have other chronic inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and lung disease compared to patients with healthy gums.
Patients who attend a dentist frequently have a different health profile to those that attend a doctor. This is a feasibility study to determine the views of patients and the public towards screening for common medical conditions in a dental practice setting and to assess the practicalities of running further, larger scale studies investigating the benefits of such an approach.
If screening patients for chronic diseases in a dental setting is practically achievable it may lead to earlier diagnosis of such diseases for patients and more cost-effective management. In addition, if knowing the gum health status of patients provides an additional benefit in the screening process, members of the dental team would be best placed to provide this screening.REC name
