    Research Summary

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a progressive, chronic condition affecting approximately 4.7 million people across the UK. It is estimated that a further 12.3 million people in the UK have a raised blood glucose level (often described as prediabetes) putting them at high risk of developing T2DM and the associated complications. The International Diabetes Federation estimate that between 26% and 50% of people with prediabetes will progress to T2DM within 5 years of diagnosis. However, with appropriate modification of the risk factors associated with T2DM, e.g. healthy eating, increased physical activity, reduction in cholesterol levels and blood pressure, T2DM can be prevented or its development delayed.

In Wales, a national diabetes prevention programme (All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme – AWDPP) has been developed to systematically identify adults at risk of developing T2DM and offer them a 30-minute face-to-face lifestyle conversation. Welsh Government are funding the programme to be delivered in 14 GP clusters across Wales in the first wave of implementation. A Formative Process and Value-Based Evaluation has also been funded to run alongside this implementation phase, which is this research.

The research will focus on examining the real world implementation of the AWDPP, focusing on the experience and views of patients and healthcare professionals involved in the programme. Fidelity to the intervention protocol and uptake of the programme will also be examined.

The programme will be delivered in 2 GP Clusters in each of the 7 Health Boards across Wales. All patients eligible to take part in the programme, i.e. those who are at high risk of developing T2DM, will be invited to take part in the research.

The Process and Value Based Evaluation will examine the early implementation of the AWDPP to help inform development of the programme and will collect data between June 2022 and January 2023.

    Summary of Results

What is the All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme?
The All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme (AWDPP) has been designed especially for people who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This short programme offers a one to one conversation about lifestyle, especially changes in eating and physical activity level that might prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Some people are then referred for further support to help with managing weight and increasing physical activity, and also to find out more about type 2 diabetes.
