Research summary
In Northern Ireland, most patients who suffer from agricultural trauma injuries are transported by air or road to the Major Trauma Centre (MTC) in the Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH). This study aims to examine the characteristics and outcomes of the cohort of agricultural trauma patients who were attended by the Northern Ireland Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and admitted under the RVH Major Trauma Service (MTS) between January 2019 and January 2023.
This study will help prehospital care providers and the Northern Ireland Major Trauma Network identify common injury patterns associated with agricultural injuries, the outcome of clinical interventions, and the effect of direct triage via air transport from rural locations to a Major Trauma Centre. The research may be of use to the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI), the Farm Safety Partnership and agricultural study programmes.
Agricultural calls will be grouped into 4 specific injury patterns:
1. Machinery, vehicles
2. Fall from height
3. Animal Attacks
4. SlurryThe study will be conducted in the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) HQ in Belfast and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. This study will retrospectively link the prehospital data from NIAS HEMS with the in-hospital data from the RVH / Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (BHSCT) in order to follow cases through to outcome. All data will be anonymised before being shared with the Research Team for analysis.
