  • Research summary

Data from a retrospective cohort studies using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) colorectal cancer (CRC) registry in the united state showed an increase in the rate of CRC in patients under the age of 50 years. Based on the observed trend, they estimated that by 2030, there will be a 90.0% and 124.2% increase in the rate of colon and rectal cancer in patients aged 20 to 34 years by 2030. And a 27.7% and 46.0% increase in patients aged 35 to 49 years. There are no studies describing the incidence of CRC in UK population

Our aim is to determine whether there has been an increase in the incidence of CRC in young adults in the UK and whether there are differences in location of cancer, stage and survival between young versus old.

We aim to achieve this by carrying out retrospective analysis of National cancer intelligence network (NCIN), Hospital episode statistics (HES) and Office of National Statistics (ONS) to evaluate the incidence of CRC in the UK. Age stratification will be carried out to assess difference in CRC location, stage at diagnosis and and survival outcome between the age groups.
