Research summary
End of life care for people with dementia is often poor and in need of improvement. The removal of the Liverpool Care Pathway leaves a guidance gap for practitioners providing care at the end of life, which needs to be filled. This should be filled with the assistance of family carers of people with dementia.
Heuristics (rules of thumb) are broad principles which can be used in complex situations which prompt individuals to make decisions. Heuristics are often used in general practice and shape decision making more than any form of formal training. This study will develop heuristics for end of life care for people with dementia through a process of co-design with family carers and professionals. We will use focus groups and implementation science to develop and explore the feasibility of heuristics in one hospital setting, one community team based within a general practice and two community palliative care teams. Implementation science refers to methods to promote the implementation of research findings into healthcare policy and practice.REC name
