  • Research summary

Given the advances in the management of atrial fibrillation, especially the new medications for stroke prevention, and the availability of new European Society of Cardiology (ESC) clinical guidelines, there is a need for the systematic collection of contemporary data regarding the management and treatment of atrial fibrillation in Europe. It is now nearly 10 years since the last European registry of the management of atrial fibrillation was undertaken and a new registry is needed. The purpose of collecting this data is to help identify how patients with atrial fibrillation are managed, whether or not the current management of atrial fibrillation is in line with the clinical guidelines and if not, the possible reasons for this, and to help plan future healthcare services and provision, and to develop subsequent clinical guidelines to improve the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. In the United Kingdom, we will collect data on up to 1000 patients with atrial fibrillation who are managed by cardiologists. Atrial fibrillation patients admitted to hospital and patients attending outpatient clinics will be eligible to be enrolled in this registry. Demographic (e.g., age, sex, ethnic group etc) and clinical (e.g., other health problems/conditions, medications, operations etc) information will be recorded at baseline and then the patient will be followed up annually for 3 years to see how their healthcare is managed over time. The follow-up will involve the patient visiting the hospital and/or review of their medical records and/or telephone call with the patient or their GP, according to the usual practice for follow-up at each hospital.
