Research summary
Tuberculosis (TB) in the UK is not very common, but 35% of all TB cases in the UK are present in London. In 2019 there were 1665 new cases of TB reported. That makes London the TB capital in Europe. We know that TB disease tends to progress the fastest in adolescents and young adults, but it is not clear what causes the disease to progress. Some scientists believe that the hormones or viruses might play some role, as well as issues faced by young people like poor adherence, disengagement with the TB services and stigmatisation.
We will investigate whether TB progression is linked to these factors. We will also explore the impact of TB on the physical, mental and social wellbeing of young people aged 10 to 24 years. We will compare the data gathered from young people with active TB and to those with latent TB and health controls. We hope that the data gathered in this study will help us understand TB in young people better and allow us to create a first in Europe TB clinic tailored specifically to the needs of adolescents and young adults.REC name
