Research summary
In partnership with the WBS, this research will aim to enhance platelet component functionality by impeding the development of the storage lesion in donated platelets, enabling platelet component storage to be increased beyond the current limit of 7 days. The aim is to increase availability as well as quality of the platelet components supplied. This will be achieved by investigation of a range of new approaches to assess the viability and functionality of platelets and to determine whether altering storage conditions using a range of methodologies can impede the development of the detrimental changes.
