  • Research summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of disability among older populations world-wide and is associated with an ageing population, physical activity (PA), and obesity (Rahman et al., 2013). Those diagnosed with OA have been shown to lead highly sedentary lifestyles with few meeting the required guidelines for PA (Sohn et al., 2014). Previous research has highlighted the importance of meeting PA guidelines of 150mins of moderate physical activity a week for an adult population to promote physical and mental health and reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD)(Dunstan et al., 2021). Further to this, high levels of sedentary behaviour (SB), irrespective of PA levels, have also shown unique risks in developing risk factors for CVD (Ekelund et al., 2019). There is currently little understanding of the impact that SB and PA have on the cardiovascular health of OA patients.

The research will be an observational, cross-sectional study for those diagnosed with lower limb OA and healthy control. The study will monitor participants PA and SB for a week using wearable devices and questionnaires in order to understand the impact these behaviours may have on cardiovascular health markers such as, heart rate, endothelial function, blood pressure and ultrasound imaging of selected arteries will be collected. The study will benefit those diagnosed with osteoarthritis through developments in knowledge around habitual activities for the health care industry. Further research and interventions may be developed as a result of this novel study that may act as preventative measures for developing cardiovascular disease in this population. The study is part of a PhD thesis that is funded and run through Yorks St John University. The study is wanting to recruit those diagnosed with radiographic knee or hip osteoarthritis.
