  • Research summary

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive scan which provides important information about the health of the eye. It is a mainstay for the diagnosis and management of many conditions, including Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO). However, there are many different companies that make these OCT machines and there is variability between the measurements. The amount of variability is unknown. Clinically, this means that patients may be under or over treated unknowingly. From a research perspective, patients are being excluded from studies because measurements from different OCT machines cannot be compared accurately.

Our study will measure the variability between two OCT machines that are used commonly within Gloucestershire Hospitals. These are the Topcon Triton and the Heidelberg Spectralis OCT machines. After calculating the variability in the measurements, we will form a conversion equation to allow the measurements from the machine to be compared accurately. This may help clinicians with treatment decisions and ensure patients are receiving the best care. The conversion equation could also be used within Ophthalmology research projects involving different OCT machines.

All patients with DMO attending medical retina clinics or the intravitreal injection clinics at Cheltenham General Hospital, will be eligible for this study. They will have their usual clinic appointment with the routine OCT scan. If they wish to participate in the study, they will have one additional scan on the second OCT machine. The second image will not impact the patient’s care and is for study purposes only. Nothing further will be required from the patient.

Recruitment of patients for the study will happen over a period of 6 months, with a further 6 months to analyse the data, form the conversion equation and publish the results. All participants will be notified of the results at the end of the study.
