Research summary
The study not part of an educational qualification however in medical school students are currently taught two clinical examination techniques for identifying fluid in the knee , the patella tap test and the patella sweep test. Our study aims to look at both of these tests and identify if they are comparable in effectiveness. Patient's included in this study will be those undergoing knee replacement surgery at Rotherham General Hospital. They will be randomly allocated one of the two tests and then examined by both a medical student and consultant on the day of their operation. During the operation fluid found in the knee joint is normally removed by the surgeon and disposed of. We intend to measure the volume of fluid found within the joint before it is disposed of. The operation will then continue as normal. We hope to discover if either test is better then the other, and therefore this test should be implemented as the main technique to prove the presence of fluid within the knee joint. The significance of this research is that it will improve clinical practice, giving a higher standard of care in regards to joint effusion.
