  • Research summary

This study will be looking to see how a food supplement may affect people with acne vulgaris compared with a placebo. The food supplement being used is a plant nutrient Diindolylmethane (DIM) + Vitamin A and has been shown to have a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin. It has been available as an oral food supplement in the UK and other countries since 1998. In this study the food supplement and placebo will be given as a sublingual (under the tongue) tablet which will dissolve. The products will be taken for 16 weeks with evaluation of the acne made every 4 weeks during this time.

Depending on the results of another study that is currently being conducted participants may also take an additional food supplement (Quercetin) which is thought to prevent the breakdown of the DIM and therefore increase the effects seen on acne. If quercetin is used then there will be a corresponding placebo tablet so that all participants take 2 supplements. This will be taken once daily in the morning within 1 hour of waking before the other supplement.
