Research summary
The Department of Health have stated that patients should have access to their General Practice (GP) Electronic Medical Records by 2015. Although the Data Protection Act 1998 gives patients the right to see their medical records, uptake is low and the procedures involved are far more laboured than is necessary especially as the majority of General Practices in England already have the capability of providing online access to patients through the widely used EMIS system, yet only a very small number of General Practices have enabled this option.
Three GP practices in England will be used to recruit approximately 30 participants for the research study and the aim is to explore what patients feel about online access to their records, how they would access their records, the issues surrounding online access, as well as how patients would react to types of information that they could potentially be able to see in their records when they are given access.REC name
