Research summary
The treatment of a deep carious lesion (Decay) approaching a healthy pulp presents a significant challenge to the practitioner. The most accepted restorative practice for the filling of deep carious baby teeth nowadays is the conventional approach which comprises complete removal of decay, followed by placement of a filling. However, a new approach in treating deep carious baby teeth has been proposed recently toward more conservative approach such as partial caries removal and sealing some decay in the tooth by the means of metal crown or filling placement.
Currently there is little data that provides specific comparison between the two treatment modalities (conventional versus conservative). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the acceptance of these two treatment approaches among children and parents as well as to determine the cost of both approaches to the NHS. This is a prospective cohort study that involves administration of questionnaires to parents and children aged 4-9 years attending Leeds Dental Institute (LDI) and School of Clinical Dentistry University of Sheffield (SCD) for the treatment of their carious baby teeth with either approach (conventional versus conservative). Cost effectiveness as well as children and parents satisfaction with both treatment modalities (conventional versus conservative) will be compared. This study will take place in LDI and SCD.REC name
