  • Research summary

The objective of this study is to explore the acceptability of delivering group-base, diabetes structured education, incorporating principles of behaviour change theory, for adults with type 1 diabetes remotely using multimedia technology that combine synchronous ("real-time" e.g. live video conferencing, chat room) and asynchronous ("anytime, anywhere") learning. This is innovative as previous work in this area has tended to rely purley on asynchronous learning on line. This would be an alternative to but would not replace traditional face-to-face methods of delivery. Approximately only 6% of newly diagnosed adults with diabetes (type 1 or 2) access structured education and it is envisaged that offering these remote, online methods of delivery would increase uptake rates.

Consecutive sampling of patients with type 1 diabetes from a routine outpatient clinics at the Cedar Centre (Royal Surrey Hospital) will be invited to part in a questionnaire study.

The questionnaire will also invite participants to give their details if they would like to be contacted to take part in a semi-structured interview either at the Cedar Centre or by telephone with one of the research team.

Purposive sampling will be used to recruit members of the health care team who are responsible for delivery of diabetes structured education. They will be invited to participate in a semi structured interview.
