Research summary
The purpose of this study is to explore the acceptability of a physical activity (PA) intervention and its support materials for the management of fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It also aims to explore potential patient reported outcome measures that might be appropriate to use in a future feasibility study.
This study corresponds to the modelling phase of developing a complex intervention to improve health prior to an exploratory trial and larger scale evaluation (Medical Research Council, 2000, Medical Research Council, 2008).
The study forms the third phase of a PhD research project that is being conducted by the chief investigator (CI), Victoria Salmon. Phase 1 of the research consisted of a review of the literature and semi-structured interviews with health professionals who are delivering a PA intervention as part of a fatigue management programme in other long term conditions. Phase 2 investigated the acceptability and deliverability of a PA intervention in RA, through focus groups and workshops with RA patients and rheumatology health professionals. It also explored and identified key components of a potential intervention. Data from phases 1 and 2 were used to inform the development of the PA intervention for this study.
