  • Research summary

Biogaran have developed a betamethasone cream for the treatment of eczema and other skin conditions. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of the new betamethasone cream to that of a marketed betamethasone cream on the vasoconstriction (narrowing) of the surface blood vessels in the skin. Betamethasone cream is an anti-inflammatory for the treatment of human skin conditions such as eczema i.e. skin irritation/inflammation caused by an allergic reaction. Anti-inflammatory drugs work by helping to control or reverse the symptoms of inflammation. One of these symptoms is a widening of blood vessels in the skin, which causes the redness in the skin that we see when the skin is inflamed. Betamethasone cream narrows these surface blood vessels and helps to reduce the inflammation and redness in the skin. In this study we will measure the extent by which the cream causes the narrowing of these blood vessels. We can do this by measuring the colour of the skin, as we would expect the skin to blanch (go whiter) the more the blood vessels narrow.
