  • Research summary

HeteroGenius Limited is a UK limited company (Company number 9114186) specialising in bespoke and off the shelf software solutions in Digital Pathology, Medical Image Analysis, Machine Learning and Data Mining. HeteroGenius Ltd is developing an AI tool to aid pathologists in skin cancer reporting and diagnosis. The AI tool will overlay digital (electronic) images of skin cells used in diagnosis with annotations (e.g., highlighting tumour regions), indicate measurements required within the report (e.g., tumour margins) and provide a likely diagnosis. The goal is for this tool to act as a pathologist’s assistant, producing the same report as would be produced manually using a microscope and glass slides, but to save time and improve workflow efficiency. This study aims to undertake a time and cost savings analysis of the AI pathology assistant. To achieve these aims we will recruit pathologists and ask them to complete pathology reports using three modes of reporting (1) using the AI pathology assistant, (2) using digital images alone, and (3) using glass slides (current, standard practice). We will time and then compare how long it takes the pathologist to complete the report in each condition. At the end of reporting, pathologists will be asked to complete the System Usability Scale to assess ease of use, and a Discrete Choice Experiment survey to assess user preferences.
