Research summary
The Better Care Fund (BCF) 2015/16 is a new approach to the national funding of care and services for people that use both NHS health care and local authority (LA) social care. It comprises a pooled fund of NHS and LA money that can be used to pay for both types of care, and which comes with a set of service plans, certain financial incentives and a central support package available to help local sites.
The overall aim will be to understand (i) the different ways the BCF is set up across the country, (ii) how far original plans were put in place, and (iii) the anticipated impacts of the new arrangements set up by the local BCF programme, which taken together should give us a sense of how far the BCF is achieving its goals (such as reducing avoidable hospital use).
