Research summary
This study aims to observe differences in taste sensitivity before and after weight loss surgery (bariatric surgery) and medically-induced weight loss (intensive weight control programme) in the obese patients seeking treatment from the UCLH Centre for Weight Loss,Metabolic and Endocrine Surgery Department (WLEM). We will perform a ’taste panel’ asking subjects to sample graded sweet solutions by tasting but not swallowing, and then asking subjects to record their taste response. We will compare any changes that occur after weight loss. We will analyse the data to see if there are differences between surgery and medically-induced weight loss. We will also measure urinary ketones (these are increased during rapid weight loss and have been proposed as suppressing appetite) on a urine sample that subjects will provide before and after weight loss.
