Research summary
This study will lead to a better understanding of how bacteria in the airways affect children with asthma. There are two parts. The second part will analyse sputum coughed up by children and the first part is a methodological study designed to demonstrate that lower airway bacteria can be found in samples of sputum - bacteria from the mouth will be added to bacteria from the airways as sputum is coughed up and we want to demonstrate that the lower airways can still be found in sputum coughed up. The second part is a longitudinal study where we will collect sputum from children with and without asthma over a 12 month period. The second part will allow us to answer the question: do bacteria in the airways cause asthma symptoms?
