  • Research summary

This study will evaluate the first patient experience measure of shared decision making (SDM) in mental health: A Shared decision making ExpeRience in mENtal HEalth (SERENE) measure. SERENE is a newly developed measure aimed at assessing the level of perceived SDM in people with mental illness from three perspectives: a service user, their social network member (e.g., a family member, carer or friend), and their clinician. This study will also examine the applicability of SERENE for people with mental illness by using appropriate psychometric analyses. SERENE will be piloted with service users, social network members and clinicians in two rounds of cognitive interviews (10 participants per group in each round [up to 60 participants in total]). SERENE will then be subject to an assessment of psychometric properties through completion of an additional survey. Upon successful completion, each participant will receive a £15 gift card. Following successful completion of all interviews, the main data collection stage (the survey completion) will commence with an estimated sample size of ≥100 service users. In addition to completing SERENE, service users will be asked to complete additional measures (e.g., the SDM-Q-9 and the DCS) for a convergent validity analysis. Data will then be subject to statistical analyses to assess the reliability and validity of SERENE. Due to the nature of this study and limited funding, it will not be possible to include social network members and clinicians in the main data collection stage (the survey completion). Also, it will not be possible to incentivise survey participants - those who complete SERENE online will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 gift card. This study will address the key gap in the field, which is the lack of existing SDM measures in mental health developed with and validated for people with mental illness.
