Research summary
Aggressive periodontitis is a rapidly progressing gum disease. Little is currently known about how it progresses after treatment. The primary aim of this study is to document the progression and outcome of treatment undertaken in all aggressive periodontitis cases seen over a 12 year period (2000 to 2011) in a dedicated clinic at the Eastman Dental Hospital.
Details of the patients seen in over this period (approximately 400 cases) are available on a dedicated database. This represents an unprecedented number of cases diagnosed in the same clinic with accessible clinical data and all of them will be contacted to invite them to participate. Each patient will attend the hospital (Eastman Clinical Investigation Center) for one appointment where we will investigate if they have lost any additional teeth or if their diagnosis has changed since they were first seen (and/or since post treatment visits) at the dental hospital. X-rays will also be used to investigate how their disease has progressed. There may be other influences on the progression of this disease and these will be investigated by documenting height, weight, smoking habits and family history of gum disease.REC name
