Research summary
This research study will focus on interviewing male patients in St. Ann's eating disorder unit. If the patient voluntarily accepts to take part in an interview, the patient will be asked questions about the kind of treatment he is receiving within the eating disorder unit and if he feels as if the treatment being provided is entirely adequate and if they are pleased with it. It is the researchers hope that this information will aid in identifying the type of treatment (and its efficiency) that male patients are being provided on the eating disorder unit, seeing as eating disorders are still largely viewed as female illnesses. What kind of feelings are experienced by the males about having an illness that is so often stereotyped as a female illness and does this affect their treatment? Additionally, male patients will be asked questions (some possibly quite personal) about their eating disorder symptoms and attitudes and life events/experiences that they feel may have had an impact on the development of their eating disorder. If the patient consents there will be the opportunity to interview relatives/carers to gain insight from their perspective.
