  • Research summary

Safety is central to the provision of quality mental health services however, adverse events do occur, sometimes with tragic personal consequences. Risk management is an essential component of protecting service users and others from harm and is a key priority for mental health services. Health policy in the UK has positioned mental health within a recovery-oriented framework which promotes a safety planning approach yet there is very limited research on safety planning in general and there is no widely accepted standard model. This study aims to describe programme theory of safety planning which can be applied across diverse mental health settings, including NHS inpatient and community, designed to be adopted across different contexts. Patients, carers and mental health professionals will be interviewed who have different experiences and knowledge of safety planning. It will carry out a realist evaluation to understand how safety planning works to produce behaviour change in patients as well as in the ways they are supported by their carers and mental health professionals.
Patients, their carers (family members / friends) and mental health professionals will be invited to take part in a semi-structured qualitative interview and attend up to two focus groups. Participants will be in the study from April 2024 – April 2026. They will undergo one informal meeting, one semi-structured qualitative interview and attend up to two focus groups where they will discuss the theories developed from analysis of the interviews in order to test and refine them. The study is based within NSFT which has various sites across Norfolk and Suffolk but with a headquarters in Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich. People will be interviewed at a Trust location of their choosing, virtually, over MS Teams or written and emailed back.
