Research summary
This study proposes to explore offspring-parent subjective experiences of parenting styles and whether there is an association between authoritarian and/or authoritative parenting and a psychosis diagnosis. It aims to use a qualitative approach to conduct offspring-parent dyad qualitative semi-structured interviews; the estimated opportunity sample size is not quantifiable at this stage and so the researcher will interview patients and parents and see who else comes forward. The Psychosis Attachment Measure (PAM) will be used to identify attachment styles in psychosis. Thematic analysis will be used to analyse the data.
A review of recent research into the association between parent/child bonding and psychiatric disorders in adulthood discussed troubling findings that suggest neglectful and overprotective parenting styles pose a risk to the development of psychiatric disorders in their children (Lima et al., 2010, 7-383).
Whilst there is evidence of global research contributing to our understanding of parental bonding styles in association with the development of psychiatric disorders in offspring, a literature search has highlighted a deficit in knowledge. This deficit specifically pertains to authoritarian and authoritative experiences of parenting in relation to psychiatric inpatients with psychosis/parent dyads in the UK (Abbaspour et al., 2021, 2). This research aims to gain insight that demonstrates the need for thorough robust assessment and evaluation of family dynamics and performance, as well as early intervention for patients and families alike.
Participants will be recruited from a North-East London Foundation Trust inpatient hospital site. They will be offered a choice of location for interview, either via MS Teams, a confidential room booked within the NHS site, or within the participants home. Participants will be expected to meet with the chief investigator for 30 minutes to gain consent and 60 minutes for a semi-structured interview. Participants will be reimbursed for their time (£20 voucher).
