Research summary
This study is being undertaken to validate a new soft tissue healing model. Currently, soft tissue healing models require the subject to undergo a “sham” surgical procedure in order to create an oral soft tissue wound. This model would take advantage of patients who are already reporting to the dental unit for surgical removal of an exogenous soft tissue growth ~(a growth on the inside of the mouth), that the dentist has identified for removal. Following the surgery, the healing of the soft tissue can be followed and monitored both visually and biochemically via samples of the saliva and the moisture around the healing area. If this study is successful, in that it allows for the monitoring of the healing process, the procedure could then be employed to evaluate therapeutics that can hasten the healing process, maintain an infection free site, and reduce patient discomfort.
