Research summary
Poor sleep during adolescence is unfortunately common and is associated with increased symptoms of poor mental health. There is emerging evidence that directly treating adolescent sleep problems can lead to reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression. One of the best evaluated sleep programmes is Sleepio, a highly interactive six session self-administered digital intervention. Whilst the results are promising, Sleepio has not yet been used with adolescents.\n\nSleepio is now being offered to young people (aged 14-17) with anxiety and depression attending specialist child and adolescent mental health services provided by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Young people being offered Sleepio will be invited to participate in this evaluation led by the University of Bath. If they consent, they will participate in telephone assessments before using Sleepio and again after completing the programme (6 weeks). Standardised assessments will assess sleep, anxiety and depression with a post user satisfaction questionnaire assessing acceptability. \n\nAn analysis will be undertaken to assess whether Sleepio is acceptable to adolescents and whether it results in improvements in sleep, anxiety and depression. \n
