Research summary
It is not known precisely why some patients develop an aggressive form of coronary artery disease whilst others, who may display similar risk factors develop less severe or even no coronary disease at all. The purpose of this research is to study changes in the blood vessels both on a large scale (macroscopically) and under the microscope to detect small particular changes that could be relevant to the development of aggressive forms of coronary disease. The more aggressive type of disease is becoming more common as our treatment for heart attacks improves and more patients survive to develop this form of disease. It causes significant reduction in quality of life for patients and by definition is resistant to our current therapies. The study may help establish new drug targets for patients with this type of coronary disease. The location of the study will be The University of Birmingham Centre for Cardiovascular Sciences. Fifty patients with diffuse (widespread) coronary disease will be recruited and compared with 50 patients with focal disease, and 50 controls with normal coronary arteries.
