  • Research summary

Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) refers to the active participation of patients and the public in research. Introducing PPI in healthcare services and in research, is a key priority of the NHS. PPI is beneficial because promotes the alignment of research priorities with the service users' unique perspectives, whilst participation increases members' feelings of empowerment and confidence.

It is necessary to evaluate PPI to ensure good practice, to understand the process behind its effectiveness and to explore the benefits it brings to the service and service users. Besides improving the quality of the PPI experience and hence the quality of research, a PPI evaluation can inform other services, to conduct better quality PPI in similar areas. Despite the benefits gained from evaluating PPI, this is rare in a mental health setting.

In 2019-20, IAPT services received over 1.6 million referrals across England with 70% experiencing some benefit from their treatment. There is however room for improvement in terms of optimizing access and engagement within the services. Therefore, understanding and establishing a PPI group in IAPT services may be necessary.
To our knowledge, there is currently no evaluation of a PPI group in IAPT services.

The current research aims to evaluate the experiences of two PPI groups that were set up in IAPT services, at Greater Manchester Mental Health Trust.
One focus group will be conducted with members of the PPI groups set up in GMMH IAPT Services.
The content and analysis of the focus group will be informed by the INVOLVE PPI framework that describes good practice in public involvement. These are: respect, support, transparency, responsiveness, fairness of opportunity and accountability.

The present research project will support the co-development of a PPI toolkit and an evaluation framework, to be used in future PPI groups in IAPT Services.
