Research summary
Approximately 9 million children in the European Union live with at least one parent addicted to alcohol. Parental substance misuse can have a considerable negative effect on the lives of young people and the family environment. The Pharos group work programme (delivered by Barnardo's) is one of a few programmes in the UK, exclusively developed to build resilience and improve outcomes for these children. It has received positive feedback from service users, however, it has yet to be evaluated. The aim of this feasibility study is to provide the necessary ground work, to prepare the programme for a pilot randomised trial. This feasibility study will focus on 1) developing a robust logic model in which to inform practice; 2) developing a programme manual and; 3) exploring the potential of trialling the Pharos group work programme in Northern Ireland. Trialling processes will enable us to identify and address any problems that may arise to minimise the risk of bias and attrition in the main pilot trail.
