Research summary
This study is a retrospective cohort study looking at factors that may affect the development and severity of in-transit metastases (ITM) from melanoma. Around 16,200 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year in the UK, with 5-10% of these developing into ITM. Therefore, around 810 to 1620 people are diagnosed with ITM in the UK each year. ITM has been shown to correlate with a worse prognosis compared with melanoma without ITM therefore it is important to understand more about why people develop ITM and what factors may correlate with more severe disease or a worse prognosis.
This study is exploring if it is possible to identify common risk factors and prognostic indicators for ITM with a view of creation of a internationally recognised classification system in the future.
