  • Research summary

The study will be a feasibility RCT with a mixed between-within design with repeated measures. There will be three conditions in the study. Participants that are due to have spinal cord stimulation (SCS)surgery will be randomly allocated to either the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) or the treatment as usual (TAU) condition. The third group will be participants that have chronic neuropathic pain but following initial trial SCS were not deemed suitable for the full implant. People are usually not deemed appropriate for the intervention due to not meeting sufficient pain relief when having trial stimulation. This group will just have the ACT intervention, but will not be part of the main RCT. The rationale for having this group in the study is to gather further information on the usefulness of the ACT self help manual for chronic neuropathic pain. All three groups will complete the measures at three different intervals (prior to SCS, 7 week and 18 week follow ups). The two intervention groups that have also had the self-help ACT intervention will also complete an interview after completing the ACT self help manual.
