Research summary
Patients with suspected malaria, routinely have three repeat bloods samples sent for testing (Rapid Diagnostic Tests and thick/thin blood films) as per national guidelines. However, there is limited published data on the necessity of these duplicate tests in the era of rapid diagnostic testing. In patients presenting to the emergency department this often results in patients being brought back to outpatient clinics specifically for this testing, resulting in a cost and time implication for patient and hospital. We want to find out if this is warranted.
