Research summary
The Discovery total elbow replacement (TER) is used for the treatment of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, trauma, post-traumatic arthritis and revision of failed elbow replacements. Despite its frequent use there is sparse published outcome data on the performance of the Discovery TER over its lifetime.
The Discovery TER has been used at Addenbrooke’s Hospital since May 2004 with anecdotally good results. However the survival of the 66 Discovery TERs implanted over this nine year period of use has never formally been investigated.
This study aims to identify how well the Discovery TERs implanted at Addenbrooke’s Hospital are performing both clinically and radiologically at this point in their implant time. The study will assess both pre and postoperative function of the elbow through completion of two validated elbow performance questionnaires and a quality of life measure. The function of the Discovery TER will also be assessed through measurement of the elbows range of movement, which will also be photographed. Furthermore evidence of implant loosening will be sought through X-ray imaging of the elbow. Through the data collected in this manner the performance of the Discovery TER at various points of its 9 year implant time will be identified, giving an indication of its overall long term performance.
