Research summary
The common cold is one of the most common human infections. Remedies for the common cold are available in a number of formats e.g. tablets, capsules, liquid drinks. Hot drink remedies provide active ingredients that are already in solution and the drug will therefore reach the bloodstream and act faster than tablets. This study has been designed to compare a paracetamol hot drink remedy (BeechamfluPlus Hot Lemon) with a paracetamol tablet (Panadol). We will be looking at: ?½ when and where the tablets start to break up in the body?½ when and where the tablets have completely broken up in the body ?½ how long it takes for the tablets and the hot drink remedy to leave the stomach ?½ the blood levels of the drug, paracetamol To look at the first three parameters, we will add small amounts of radioactive material to the tablets and the drink. The radiation emitted will be detected outside the body by a device known as a gamma camera. We will also take blood samples to allow us to measure the levels of the drug in your bloodstream.
