  • Research summary

This research project aims to compare the results of retinoscopy (an objective method used to measure the glasses prescription required, normally used to examine children)between two eye-care professionals: one Orthoptist and one Optometrist. The experiment will be carried out on children between the ages of 3-8 years, already attending an appointment with the Optometrist for routine retinoscopy. These patients will be consenting to be additionally tested by the Orthoptist. Children will be tested with dilated pupils as is standard test procedure for the retinoscopy for which they are attending, thus drop instillation will not form part of this research study.
Once all data has been collected the retinoscopy results will be compared between the Optometrist and Orthoptist, to assess difference in refractive error measured and in time taken to examine the patients between the two different professionals. There will be two time periods of data collection: one before and one after additional training in refraction received by the Orthoptist.
