Research summary
The Trust has implemented a new computer decision support system called LowCode to support its secondary clinical assessment of 999 calls taken using the primary prioritisation system called Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS)(TM) (v13.3.326 (6-4-2022), an internationally used tool.
Until recently, only nurses were permitted to use the LowCode software, although there have been UK ambulance services where paramedics have used the software as part of previous contractual use rights. However, such services used the software in a way that did not allow differentiation between the two professional groups, so comparisons between practices could not be easily made.
The Trust undertook a preliminary piece of work, published here (Proposed use of the Emergency Communication Nurse System in Welsh Ambulance Service 999 Secondary Triage with Paramedic and Nurse Users - AEDR Journal ) to allow paramedics to use the LowCode system to support their secondary clinical assessment of 999 calls; as they have been doing for many years, albeit with a different support tool. This research aims to compare and explore the triage and clinical audit outcomes of nurses and paramedics using LowCode to identify differences or similarities in practice. Such research could begin to evidence the levels of safety of paramedics and nurses using the tool and develop individual education programmes specific to professional groups involved in telephone consultation services.
