Research summary
The study team aimed to develop an augmentative and alternative communication aid for use by intubated patients in the acute care setting who were temporarily unable to speak. This communication aid would provide a means of non-verbal communication with friends, family and staff (who were also known as communication partners). The first step in development would involve exploring and identifying user (patients/family/staff) needs and requirements of such a communication aid through interviews with ex ICU patients and communication partners. The data collected through this study would form an evidence base for the design and development of such a communication aid in the future.
