  • Research summary

This study is looking at the length of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) in participants following revision hip and revision knee surgery and whether 7 day or 14-day NPWT therapy is warranted following this type of surgery. This study involves 164 participants, 82 participants who are scheduled for revision hip surgery and 82 participants who are scheduled for revision knee surgery, will be randomised into either a “control group” or a "study group" arm. The "control group" will receive PICO dressing for a period of week (PICO 7 dressing system) and the "study group" for a period of 2 weeks (PICO 14 dressing system). The dressings are exactly the same on both systems and the only difference is the duration of the length of time that the pump will work for.
The dressing and pump activation will occur in theatre, straight after surgery.
Participants will be followed up in clinic 1-week post-surgery, 2 weeks post-surgery and 6 weeks post-surgery. At each visit, a photograph of the wound is taken, to document the healing process. Participants will be telephoned at 3 weeks post-op, to see how their wound is doing and whether any safety reporting is required.
After seeing their treating clinician at their 6 weeks post-op visit and if their wound has healed, the participant will have ended their duration in the study.
